“She won’t follow through,” I said, spitting into the scrub grass at my feet. I narrowly missed sloshing my own toes and quickly drew my foot back.

“Why do you say that?” Rio wanted to know.

“I’ve been her target more than once. I don’t mean to be cruel, but that woman isn’t pretty, inside or out. I’m not trying to be snitty, but if you can’t be honest and up front with the world, they’ll go the other direction. My guess is that her Albert is no prize, but neither is she.”

“Such a shame,” whimpered Minnie. “Some people have everything and don’t know it.”

“Well put, Minnie,” I said. Anyway, it’s just my opinion, although she has been less than kind to you, too.”

“Girls,” warned Rio. “She is who she is. Wish her the best if she wants to go on her way. The motorhome is extremely generous. The three of us could all ride together. No more piecing together that lunch wagon.”

“Not me…” muttered Minnie softly.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

Minnie shook her head to escape her reverie. “Huh? Oh, nothing.”

“Minnie…” Rio chimed in. “What aren’t you telling us?”

“Nothing,” she said, too quickly. “I’m just not used to being wanted.”

Neither Rio nor I could think of anything light-hearted to say, so we kept our silence and busied ourselves with looking around.
